Community Tips

Read helpful tips from HAE patients on ways to manage your disease.

Attacks

  • When I went to college, I prepared my roommates and friends for possible attacks, and told them what to look for and what to do in an emergency.
  • My mom has always told me to try to remain as calm and collected as I can, because panic and anxiety may aggravate an attack.
  • If I start to feel very tired, it’s often a sign that I will have an attack soon, so I know to get myself ready.

Clothing/Accessories

  • I keep a pair of loose-fitting shoes, like loafers, at work, so that if an attack starts in my feet I can easily change into them.
  • I make it a habit to take off my wedding ring and watch before I go to sleep.

Parenting

  • Remember that you are your child's advocate. Advocacy equals control over the disease. That means you need to be in control of how your child is treated in the school. Allergies are commonplace, and schools have learned to deal with them. This disease is a little more mysterious, but it needs to be addressed in a similar way.
  • Educate all the people around you who take care of your children--before a crisis. Provide an information packet with everything needed to take care of your child in an emergency.
